Wednesday 28th

After a week of windy and/or wet conditions it was perfect today to look for odonata. The recently-discovered SCARCE BLUE-TAILED DAMSELFLIES were still present. At least seven were on the new Dragonfly Ponds. Also on the Estate were four Blue-tailed Damselflies, six Common Blue Damselflies, one Red-eyed Damselfly, 34 Small Red-eyed Damselflies, one Azure Damselfly, two Willow Emerald Damselflies, two Emerald Damselflies, five Ruddy Darters, 29 Common Darters, one Brown Hawker, one Southern Hawker, 25 Migrant Hawkers, and two Emperors.

Wednesday 21st

A mid-morning walk along the Green Wall brought extraordinary numbers of Willow Emerald Damselfly. A minimum of 66 were recorded, almost ten times higher than the previous record! Two Common Blue Damselflies, one Blue-tailed Damselfly, 26 Ruddy Darters, nine Common Darters, one Emperor, 21 Migrant Hawkers, and two Brown Hawkers were also logged.

Thursday 15th

A much windier day today and it made things a bit more difficult, but a female SCARCE BLUE-TAILED DAMSELFLIES was found hiding in the grass.

Tuesday 13th

A check on the SCARCE BLUE-TAILED DAMSELFLIES revealed at least five males and a female, the latter seen ovipositing in the pools. Fingers crossed for the next generation next year!

Monday 12th

The day started with a casual look through some of the recent photos taken in the area. Sharp eyes noted that one of the damselflies looked odd and looked remarkably like a male SCARCE BLUE-TAILED DAMSELFLY! Photos and books were consulted, plus a second opinion, and sure enough everyone agreed. A new species for Kent! Today the area was checked and three males were seen. All the individuals were on the recently-dug pools in the Dragonfly Pond Field. Proof that if you build it, they will come!
