Welcome to the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust
Charitable Incorporated Organisation No: 1197743
As an accredited bird observatory and registered charity SBBOT is committed to the conservation and recording of the natural environment in the Sandwich Bay area, and in so doing offers opportunities for education, training and research.
This work is carried out by our Warden and Assistant Warden and a team of volunteers and is financed largely by our members by annual subscriptions and attendance at Club events. These events, the shop and the accommodation are also open to the public.
Our ringing operations have been continuous ever since, providing information on the survival, productivity and movements of birds in the local area.
Our dedicated Education Team are passionate about engaging young people with nature; giving opportunities to learn in an outdoor environment.
Stay with us
Whatever your reason for visiting the local area, the Field Centre offers modern, comfortable, self-catering accommodation at competitive prices.
Talks take place in the lecture hall at the Field Centre on Thursday evenings, happening every fortnight from mid-September.
Our organised walks usually take place on Wednesdays, but sometimes on Tuesdays or Thursdays. You can find information on the details page.
You can broaden your knowledge of the natural world from the comfort of your own home via the Zoom lectures with SBBOT's friendly and knowledgeable team.
The SBBOT owns and rents several areas around the Sandwich Bay estate, which our voluntary conservation team manage under the direction of the conservation committee for the benefit of the flora and fauna of the area.
This photograph was taken by Nik Mitchell on our Open Day 25th August 2019. It shows the Field Centre and all the reserves we own and/or manage.
