A thin residue of this year’s butterflies remained, with the penultimate transect walk of the season producing just 38 butterflies; hardly surprising after so much recent rain. Small Whites (14) and Small Heaths (14) made up the bulk, with guest appearances from Small Copper (6), Large and Green-veined Whites, Brown Argus and Common Blue (all singles).
A substantial influx of Red Admirals has taken place, with at least 30 across the Estate this morning, all fresh-looking individuals.
Small Heaths continued to dominate the transect results this morning, comprising 65% of those recorded. Variety was probably slightly poorer than might be expected at this time of year, with all other species in single figure numbers.
The BMS transect total of 140 was the second highest for this time of year in the 9 years that the transect has been walked, thanks largely to a count of 78 Small Heaths. The supporting cast included 31 Small Whites, with single figure numbers of everything else.
