In the evening around 800 Jackdaws came to roost on the Green Wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Saturday 29th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was an influx of various heron species with a <strong>Spoonbill<\/strong> in Pegwell Bay, two <strong>Great White Egrets<\/strong> and two <strong>Cattle Egrets<\/strong> on RSPB Worth marshes, and 20 Little Egrets on New Downs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Friday 28th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was a late push of 16 Red Kites over RSPB Worth marshes with a passing <strong>Cattle Egret<\/strong> and three Green Sandpipers dropping into the pools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Wednesday 26th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Autumn birds were apparent on New Downs with 17 Little Egrets, nine Teals, 16 Lapwings, and a Wood Sandpiper, whilst a family of Bearded Tits was particularly notable and is thought to be the first breeding record for the Sandwich Bay area.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8823\" style=\"width: 1392px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8823 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mediterranean-Gull-Jun24-PColtman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1392\" height=\"825\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mediterranean-Gull-Jun24-PColtman.jpg 1392w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mediterranean-Gull-Jun24-PColtman-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mediterranean-Gull-Jun24-PColtman-1024x607.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mediterranean-Gull-Jun24-PColtman-768x455.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1392px) 100vw, 1392px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mediterranean Gull by P.Coltman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Monday 24th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were a few unusual sights on the local golf courses, namely an Avocet on Royal St George's Golf Course and families of both Water Rail and Stonechat on Prince's Golf Course. Curlew numbers were also building in Pegwell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sunday 23rd<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A very hot day out there. The latter the first confirmed breeding for many years and another high point an excellent year in the area for breeding wildfowl. Thanks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Wednesday 19th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In sunny but breezy conditions there was an influx of Swifts and Sand Martins on RSPB Worth marshes, with 250 of the former and 25 of the latter. It's been a good one. Lucky for us autumn waders are now upon us with t<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hree Wood Sandpipers and two Green Sandpipers present today. A brood of Shovelers also appeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Monday 17th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both Honey-buzzard and Osprey were seen nearby today but failed to drift into the Recording Area. The scorecard at the end of the day finished on 12 birds, which might not seem much but is a new record for Sandwich Bay (previously seven on 28th May 2000).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Friday 14th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A large number of Manx Shearwaters were reported off the Kent coast today, but mostly from the west of the County. We tried looking offshore here but with no luck. We did manage Gannets, Sandwich Terns, and singles of Fulmar and Common Scoter though. Although hard to see, it sang frequently around the New Downs New Pool area. Elsewhere there was a late Wood Sandpiper on RSPB Worth marshes and a male Marsh Harrier on the Estate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Friday 7th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A very brief <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>GOLDEN ORIOLE<\/strong><\/span> called on RSPB Worth marshes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Thursday 6th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After not reported for a while, the brood of nine Pintails appeared with the female again on RSPB Worth marshes. This is a very rare breeding species in the UK with this brood thought to be the first confirmed breeding in the county since 1981. A few young Grey Herons also dropped into the marsh, having presumably fledged from somewhere not far away. Ten Hobbies and 20 Ringed Plovers were also present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Wednesday 5th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were still small groups of waders passing through on their way north to their breeding grounds. At least 25 Ringed Plovers were on RSPB Worth marshes and high tide at Pegwell Bay saw 12 Ringed Plovers, four Dunlins, seven Grey Plovers, two Greenshanks, and a Knot. A Red Kite also flew north during the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tuesday 4th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another group of 11 Red Kites flew north, four Egyptian Geese were on New Downs, and a gathering of 650 Starlings was on Hundred Acre field. There are now lots of young Black-headed Gulls on Restharrow Scrape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Monday 3rd<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of yesterday's Curlew Sandpipers remained on RSPB Worth marshes.
