Friday 31st<\/strong><\/p>\n

There were six moths of six species including an unseasonal Caloptilla stigmatella<\/em>, likely disturbed while trying to overwinter nearby. The weekend is a mix of wet and wind and unsuitable for trapping.<\/p>\n

Thursday 30th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another cold night at 4.1\u00b0C and there were accordingly 20 moths of 14 species. Another Merveille du Jour was the highlight and there was a Red-green Carpet. For the first time in a while there were no migrants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wednesday 29th<\/strong><\/p>\n

The warm night kept things going before the rain came down, there were 57 moths of 20 species in the trap. The main highlight was another Radford's Flame Shoulder, two Satellites and a Brick.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tuesday 28th<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Merveille du Jour sitting on the trap was a very telling sign that it was going to be a good trap. Overnight conditions were excellent, temperatures didn't dip below 8.8\u00b0C and with it came 63 moths of 22 species including a long-anticipated first for the Obs - A\u00a0WHITE-SPECK<\/span><\/strong>. While it is much more established on the west coast, there are a swathe of Kent records but has somehow avoided us despite all our trapping efforts! Other species included a Blair's Shoulder-knot and other migrants in three Turnips, two Rush Veneers, a Rusty Dot Pearl and a Dark Sword Grass.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sunday 26th<\/strong><\/p>\n

It went below 3\u00b0C and only two moths ventured out in the cold - A Black Rustic and a Lunar Underwing.<\/p>\n

Saturday 25th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another drop in temperatures lowered the catch this time to 23 moths of 11 species. A Satellite<\/strong> was new for the year, there was a late record of a female Oak Hook-tip and some migrants in two Turnips and a Rusty Dot Pearl.<\/p>\n

Wednesday 22nd<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interestingly, numbers bumped up to 74 of 23 species despite the overnight temperatures dropping to 6.4\u00b0C. The main moth of note was our first Chestnut since the Spring and in terms of migrants, four Rusty Dot Pearls and five Turnips suggests things are still moving.<\/p>\n

Tuesday 21st<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another quiet night with 34 moths of 14 species in the trap, brightened by a\u00a0Radford's Flame Shoulder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Monday 20th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Given the wet and windy conditions, it wasn't a surprise to see numbers fall off to 43 of 13 species. Migrants saw a slight increase to four Turnips and three Rusty Dot Pearls.<\/p>\n

Sunday 19th<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wind has picked up now but there were still good numbers of moths around with 71 of 24 species in the trap. Following yesterdays Blair's, there was a\u00a0Grey Shoulder-knot\u00a0<\/strong>which is just about recorded annually at the Obs. With the wind swinging around to the South, there was a good showing of migrants with three Turnips, two Rusty Dot Pearls and a Pearly Underwing.<\/p>\n

Saturday 18th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Very slightly cooler at 11.3\u00b0C but no wind and the trap was running from dusk giving 116 moths of 29 species.\u00a0Blair's Shoulder-knot\u00a0<\/strong>(2) was new for the year. There was an Oak Rustic this time of the orange marked type plus three Rusty-dot Pearls, two Clancy's Rustics, a Delicate and a Beet Moth.<\/p>\n

Friday 17th<\/strong><\/p>\n

A late start to the trapping due to the car park being busy might be linked to the smaller catch. There were 38 moths of 14 species.\u00a0Oak Rustic\u00a0<\/strong>was new for the year and there was another\u00a0Palpita vitrealis\u00a0<\/em>plus three Rusty-dot Pearls.<\/p>\n

The trap at the back of the ringing room was even quieter with 22 moths of 14 species.<\/p>\n

With the temperature still just in double figures - 11.6\u00b0C - wasps are still showing up in the trap.<\/p>\n

Thursday 16th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some clear patches before some heavy showers allowed the temperature down to 10.1\u00b0C. There were 97 moths of 25 species. There was one Rush Veneer, one\u00a0Palpita vitrealis<\/em> and three Rusty-dot Pearls. More White-points are emerging giving a total of ten. I commented on a late Kent Black Arches previously but that was beaten by another last night. An early November Moth agg, called for closer examination and it turned out to be a November Moth<\/strong>, one day we will identify a Pale November Moth...<\/p>\n

Wednesday 15th<\/strong><\/p>\n

More damp and drizzle but despite the minimum being a bit lower at 11.4\u00b0C the catch improved to 96 moths of 26 species. Merveille du Jour<\/strong> was new for the year as it made its annual appearance away from its typical woodland habitat. Brick and Pine Carpet were at least new for the autumn. There were even one or two migrants - a Pearly Underwing and three Rusty-dot Pearls.<\/p>\n

Tuesday 14th<\/strong><\/p>\n

A second damp, drizzly night saw the temperature not fall below 12.8\u00b0C but the catch reduced to 50 moths of 16 species. A tiny\u00a0Cosmopterix pulchrimella\u00a0<\/em>added a bit of silver bling to the proceedings but there were no migrants.<\/p>\n

Monday 13th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Almost unheard of but there was rain overnight. The cloud kept the minimum at 13.5\u00b0C but the rain reduced the catch to 89 of 23 species. There was another Barred Sallow and two Dusky-lemon Sallows. Migrants included a Scarce Bordered Straw and a Rusty-dot Pearl<\/p>\n

Saturday 11th<\/strong><\/p>\n

A complete covering of cloud meant the moon had little effect and the temperature was warmer at 12.5\u00b0C. The catch rose to 145 moths of 34 species.\u00a0Yellow-line Quaker, Green-brindled Crescent <\/strong>and\u00a0Barred Sallow\u00a0<\/strong>were new for the year. There were also some migrants, namely, Four-spotted Footman, Scarce Bordered Straw, and three Rusty-dot Pearls.<\/p>\n

Thursday 9th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although there was no cloud the influence of the moon is very slowly declining. There were 27 moths of 15 species. A Palpita vitrealis\u00a0<\/em>and two Rusty-dot Pearls were of note and a Feathered Thorn<\/strong> was the first this autumn.<\/p>\n

Wednesday 8th<\/strong><\/p>\n

The moon continues to shine but there was a very slight increase to 16 moths. Three Rusty-dot Pearls hinted at what might be if the moon was in another phase.<\/p>\n

Tuesday 7th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although it was slightly warmer at 9.4\u00b0C the moon dominated proceedings and there were just 11 moths of ten species. September Thorn continued their good run with another example and there were even two 'micros' - Blastobasis lacticolella\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Eudonia angustea.<\/em><\/p>\n

Monday 6th<\/strong><\/p>\n

The combined effects of two windy days followed by a very bright moon resulted in just 15 moths of eight species in the trap. These were seven Lunar Underwings, two Large Yellow Underwings and singles of Beaded Chestnut, Shaded Broad-bar, Feathered Ranunculus, Feathered Brindle and Clancy's Rustic. There were no migrants nor micros.<\/p>\n

Friday 3rd<\/strong><\/p>\n

Much warmer tonight hitting 13\u00b0C, however the heavy winds have hit us and the catch was reduced from yesterday with 115 moths of 20 species. A very autumnal trap with six Feathered Brindle, six Beaded Chestnut, a Black Rustic and the first three Feathered Ranunculus<\/strong> of the season. Migrants consisted of just singles each of Rusty Dot Pearl, Turnip and Rush Veneer.<\/p>\n

Thursday 2nd<\/strong><\/p>\n

Similar conditions apart from it being slightly warmer at 7.1\u00b0C. There were 146 moths of 23 species. There were six Clancy's Rustics, two Silver Ys, two Rush Veneers and a Pearly Underwing<\/p>\n

Wednesday 1st<\/strong><\/p>\n

Calm and cool again last night. A minimum of 4.9\u00b0C reduced the catch to 125 moths of 20 species. Despite this there was a Scarce Bordered Straw, a Turnip and a Dark Sword-grass.<\/p>\n
