An <strong>Oak Processionary<\/strong> was the best of the bunch and the only addition for the year. Two Small Wainscots, one of each colour form, added some variety and a Maple Prominent was a good find for the main trap being scarcely seen away from the Jubilee Field. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tuesday 29th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A respectable catch of 260 moths of 85 species. On the migrants side, a Tree-lichen Beauty was the standout amongst two Small Mottled Willows, two Turnips and a Dark Sword-grass while an <em>Acrobasis suavella\u00a0<\/em>is a good record of a more local species. There were two year ticks for the Obs in <strong>Mouse Moth<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Oak Hook-tip<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Friday 25th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The trap was placed under cover by the Ringing Room due to constant rainfall, reducing the catch but a worthwhile venture with 136 moths of 55 species. Two Chocolate-tips were the first for some months and the kittens were well represented with single examples of Sallow and Poplar Kitten. The moth of the day was a very fresh Small Mottled Willow, completely unlike the more worn examples seen earlier in the year. While more likely an immigrant, its fun to speculate that it could be a sign of local breeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Thursday 24th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A bump in moths was very nice to have ahead of a very successful Moth's and Muffins event where we had 266 moths of 79 species to show people. The Common Rustic group still lead the counts at 47 present and there was a noticeable increase in Southern Wainscot with ten in the trap. A slightly worn <strong>Campion<\/strong> and an immaculate\u00a0<strong>Peach Blossom<\/strong> were the only additions to the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Wednesday 23rd<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A slightly warmer night bumped up the numbers a little bit to 179 moths of 59 species. There were some signs of migration with a Dark Sword-grass, two Turnips and most notably the first <strong>Scarce Bordered Straw\u00a0<\/strong>of the year. A knackered\u00a0<strong>Sussex Emerald\u00a0<\/strong>was another highlight with <strong>Twin-spotted Wainscot<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Rosy Rustic<\/strong> further adding to the year list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tuesday 22nd<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After a few very wet nights, the trap went out again and produced 132 moths of 52 species. <strong>Dusky Thorn<\/strong>, <strong>Poplar Kitten<\/strong>, <strong>Pine Carpet<\/strong> and a drab but unmistakable <strong>Porter's Rustic<\/strong> were new additions for the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Friday 18th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The wind finally died down which gave way to a better catch in the main trap with 342 moths of 90+ species. It was mostly a barrage of the 'yellow underwings' but a <strong>Tree-lichen Beauty<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Yellow-tail <\/strong>and a stunning\u00a0<strong>Large Emerald<\/strong> were all new for the year. Also of note were singles of <em>Uncinus obductella<\/em>, <em>Sciota rhenella<\/em>, and a few <em>Gymnancyla canella<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12107\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12107 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000047388-1024x769.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"790\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000047388-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000047388-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000047388-768x577.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000047388-1536x1153.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000047388-2048x1538.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Large Emerald. J Bull<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thursday<strong> 17th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were 197 moths of 57 species in the car park trap, mainly featuring a mix of Dark Arches, Common Rustic agg. and Smoky Wainscot but there were a few additions to the Obs year list with <strong>Copper Underwing<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Webb's Wainscot<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tuesday 15th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Due to holidays, illness and time pressures trapping has been irregular but visitors have contributed some good records including a\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Light Crimson Underwing<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>and several\u00a0<em>Sciota rhenellas <\/em>in the last week. There was a <strong>Festoon\u00a0<\/strong>on Sandown Road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A fairly good showing by the main trap despite overnight conditions being far from ideal and cold at 11.9\u00b0C. There were 166 moths of 47 species present and the first\u00a0<strong>Canary-shouldered Thorn<\/strong> of the year along with an Early Thorn and a Herald.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Monday 14th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some south easterly winds and cloudy, humid overnight spells didn't produce the sought-after migrants seen elsewhere in the country but the main trap was bustling with 413 moths of 117 species. Diamondbacks were the most numerous with 37 and singles of <em>Sciota rhenella<\/em> and Pigmy Footman were notable records. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first <strong>Jersey Tiger <\/strong>of the year was seen flying around the Obs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Friday 11th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Overnight conditions were very clear, reducing the potential catch to 144 moths of 60 species. Poplar Hawk-moths made a re-emergence with four in the trap and there was a year tick in a lovely <strong>Rosy Footman<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tuesday 8th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Red-belted Clearwing<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0came to a lure by the Obs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sunday 6th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Red-tipped Clearwing came to a lure by the Obs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Friday 4th<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A very cool night with temperatures reaching just 11<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00b0C and accordingly there were 199 moths of 56 species. The only standout moth was a biggie - the 3rd record of\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Four-spotted<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">for the Obs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11958\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11958\" style=\"width: 386px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11958\" src=\"https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/four-spotted-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/four-spotted-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/four-spotted-769x1024.jpg 769w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/four-spotted-768x1023.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/four-spotted-1153x1536.jpg 1153w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/four-spotted-1538x2048.jpg 1538w, https:\/\/sbbot.org.uk\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/four-spotted-scaled.jpg 1922w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11958\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Four-spotted. 4th July 2025. J Bull<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Wednesday 2nd<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The warmest night of the year, hitting 18\u00b0C which probably contributed to a catch of 664 moths of 122 species. Dark Arches and Smokey Wainscot dominated the counts, collectively accounting for half the catch and there was a stampede of 23 Elephant Hawk-moths. <strong>Mother of Pearl<\/strong>, <strong>Lunar-spotted Pinion<\/strong>, <strong>Garden Tiger<\/strong>, <strong>Small Angle Shades<\/strong> and <strong>Brown-veined Wainscot<\/strong> were new for year.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday 30th There were 229 moths of 74 species in the trap.
