This five day - four night trip will depart from the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory car park at 7am on 27th April 2025 and return on Thursday 1st May 2025 at 8pm.<\/p>\n

Transport:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Travel will be by two comfortable minibuses. We will be staying at the excellent Portland Heights Hotel which has panoramic views over Chesil Beach (see below).<\/p>\n

Price:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The price of \u00a3565 per person (based on sharing a twin room)<\/p>\n

Price includes all transport, dinner (2 course meal), a full Dorset breakfast and a packed lunch\/ sandwiches and refreshments at a local cafe, guiding and visits to local top birding spots including Lodmoor RSPB reserve, Chesil Beach and Radipole Lake RSPB.<\/p>\n

This trip is designed to coincide with the peak migration period at the \u2018Bill\u2019 for both passerines and seabirds including Skuas and Shearwaters etc. This year saw huge arrivals of Wheatears (350) Willow Warblers (1000+) and excellent numbers of Whinchats , Flycatchers, Redstarts and plenty of Warblers, Pipits and Ring Ouzels! There is a good chance for some rarities, as well as a potential Cirl Bunting which has taken up breeding there.<\/p>\n

Here is a quote from Portland Bill Bird Observatory on a day at the end of April this year:<\/p>\n

\u201cWow, what a ripping day - not that that was altogether surprising given the combination of clear, cold air that followed the passing of an overnight rain band but certainly a 'Portland at its best' spring arrival to remember. Compiling some meaningful day-totals for the island as a whole wasn't the easiest task since there was a conspicuous and rapid throughput of birds from the Bill to points northward so duplication was an issue; however, likely conservative summations include 350\u00a0Wheatears\u00a0<\/strong>(nearly all northwestern birds), 250\u00a0Willow Warblers<\/strong>, 180\u00a0Whitethroats<\/strong>, 160\u00a0Blackcaps<\/strong>, 30\u00a0Chiffchaffs<\/strong>, 28\u00a0Redstarts<\/strong>, 23\u00a0Sedge Warblers<\/strong>, 22\u00a0Whinchats<\/strong>, 20\u00a0Yellow Wagtails<\/strong>, 15\u00a0Grasshopper Warblers<\/strong>, 11\u00a0Garden Warblers<\/strong>, 10\u00a0Lesser Whitethroats<\/strong>, 9\u00a0Reed Warblers<\/strong>, 6\u00a0Pied Flycatchers<\/strong>, 5\u00a0Ring Ouzels<\/strong>\u00a0and singles of\u00a0Turtle Dove<\/strong>,\u00a0Tree Pipit<\/strong>,\u00a0Black Redstart<\/strong>,\u00a0Goldcrest<\/strong>,\u00a0Spotted Flycatcher<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Redpoll<\/strong>; visible passage was sadly neglected but\u00a0Swallows\u00a0<\/strong>were in the mid-hundreds,\u00a0Sand\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0House Martins<\/strong>\u00a0certainly well into three figures and\u00a0Swifts\u00a0<\/strong>in the low dozens. (<\/em>Seawatch produced) ...400 Gannets\u00a0<\/strong>(their highest total of the spring to date), 205\u00a0commic terns<\/strong>, 180\u00a0Bar-tailed Godwits<\/strong>, 47\u00a0Sandwich Terns<\/strong>, 20\u00a0Arctic Terns<\/strong>, 5\u00a0Arctic Skuas<\/strong>\u00a0and singles of\u00a0Red-throated Diver<\/strong>,\u00a0Great Northern Diver<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Pomarine Skua<\/strong>\u00a0were a fair little tally for here<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
