Our Cause
We are dedicated to conserving and recording the wildlife of Sandwich Bay while advancing education, research, and environmental awareness. Our work is guided by scientific integrity, sustainability, community involvement, and a long-term commitment to protecting nature for future generations.
This work is carried out by our Warden, Assistant Warden and a team of volunteers and is financed largely by our members through annual subscriptions and attendance at Club events. These events, the shop and the accommodation are also open to the public.
ACCESS & DIVERSITY STATEMENT
SBBOT believes everyone needs exposure to nature and should have the opportunity to immerse themselves in it.
Known for its healing and stress-relieving benefits, nature can also be exciting.
We strive to encourage community participation and improve accessibility for all, including acquiring a hireable mobility scooter and making paths and gateways easier to navigate. We aim to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels accepted and valued.
We welcome feedback from users about access challenges to help us improve. When planning changes, we consider accessibility to ensure inclusivity from the start.

PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT HAPPEN
At the heart of SBBOT is a dedicated community of people who make its work possible. From experienced leadership to passionate volunteers, each plays a vital role in sustaining the observatory's mission.
Our President provides long-standing advocacy and visibility for conservation, while the Trustees guide the charity's direction and governance. Day to day the Warden and Assistant Warden lead operations, supported by skilled staff who bring expertise and continuity.
Alongside them, voluntary managers and a wider network of volunteers contribute their time, knowledge, and energy, ensuring that SBBOT continues to thrive as a centre for conservation research and education in Sandwich Bay.
