A Variable Damselfly in the Haven was a good record as we don’t get too many away from their stronghold on Worth.
Far and away the best day of the year so far with nine Odonata species recorded on Worth. A record count of seven Large Red Damselflies were recorded, mostly in the ditches around the Great Wood, and good numbers of Azure, Variable, and our first Common Blue Damselflies were around. Four Banded Demoiselles were nice to see along the Pinnock Wall, six Hairy Dragonflies were patrolling the ditches, and our first five Black-tailed Skimmers (all tenerals) had emerged.
Another day another new species. An afternoon wander on Worth produced a Banded Demoiselle.
An afternoon’s walk around New Downs saw our first Four-spotted Chaser of the year, a traditional site for this species.
A few more Broad-bodied Chasers now out with singles on the Estate today and Worth yesterday.
A burst of activity in the morning sun saw single Hairy Dragonfly and Variable Damselfly on Worth, and Broad-bodied Chaser, three Azure Damselflies, and four Blue-tailed Damselflies on the Estate.
