Monday 23rd

The warm weather meant that pockets out of the wind held a fair few butterflies. Ten Speckled Woods, two Commas, and two Small Coppers were seen.

Saturday 21st

A Wall Brown on the ‘dump clump’ at the edge of the Estate and Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club was a welcome sighting.

Friday 20th

A Gatekeeper was on the Green Wall this afternoon, our latest ever record.

Thursday 19th

Two Clouded Yellows were on New Downs with 26 Small Heaths the most numerous butterfly.

Wednesday 18th

Five Small Coppers on the Estate was a definite increase.

Monday 16th

A late Meadow Brown in the Oasis was unusual and a few Small Coppers were about.

Sunday 15th

Another beautiful day to be walking around. A Clouded Yellow was in the Downsbridge area and the first Peacock for a while was along the Pinnock Wall on Worth.

Friday 13th

Three Clouded Yellows and 72 Small Heaths were on New Downs today.

Thursday 12th

The BMS transect was just about do-able but the cloud and increasing wind made it far from optimum. Small Whites continue to dominate with 32 seen and, apart from 12 small Heaths, all else were in single figures, including a late Gatekeeper. A separate observer on New Downs was rewarded with seven Clouded Yellows.

Tuesday 10th

A good look around the Estate resulted in 13 Small Heaths, two Small Coppers, 12 Large Whites, 45 Small Whites, one Green-veined White, four Brown Argus, two Common Blues, seven Speckled Woods, four Holly Blues, three Red Admirals, four Commas, and four Painted Ladies.

Sunday 8th

Eight species on New Downs today with 15 Small Heaths snatching top prize away from the 14 Small Whites. A solitary Gatekeeper was hanging on.

Monday 2nd

New Downs once again held Clouded Yellows with eight present today. Clearly the best site for this species in the area. The BMS transect was completed on the Estate and as expected Small White was the most numerous species with 38 individuals. A few Commas and Holly Blues were gratefully received. Late morning three Clouded Yellows were seen on the southern end of the Estate.

Sunday 1st

Small White led with 23 individuals but there were very few grassland species such as Common Blue, Brown Argus, and Small Heath. At least 14 Painted Ladies were dotted around. However, the Sunday Morning walkers provided our first records of Wall Brown for the year on the corner of Restharrow wall.
