In contrast to some years when more than a dozen species have been on the wing at the start of October, only seven were flying this year. A mix of low temperatures and rain ensured that the only butterfly seen beyond the 9th was a Speckled Wood on the 13th, until the end of the month when Small Copper and Red Admiral were seen again and a Clouded Yellow was on New Downs and a Brimstone fluttered past the toll gate on the 31st.
