After the recent unsettled weather butterflies remained in reasonable numbers on the transect, the total of 150 again made up largely of Small Heaths (75), with Small White (27), Common Blue (14) and Brown Argus (8) making up for diminished numbers of Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown.
Given last week’s remarks it was with some relief that 168 butterflies were recorded on the transect, 50% of which were Small Heaths, aided and abetted by 19 Brown Argus, equalling their record numbers of last year, doubtless with more to come.
Some unsettled weather and in particular an almost biblical downpour yesterday afternoon was bound to have depressed things and just 160 butterflies were counted on this week’s walk, suggesting that the end to the 2017 season might be earlier than usual. Still, Common Blue (25) and Brown Argus (9) were in decent numbers and a Clouded Yellow was seen on the path by the Little Elms.
The start to the new month coincided with this week’s transect walk, numbers on which were almost exactly the same as last week. Highlights included 2 Clouded Yellows, 12 Brown Argus, which are having a second successive record year, 86 Gatekeepers, which are starting to decline from remarkably high levels, and a resurgence in Small Heath and Common Blue numbers.
