Despite the pernicious NW wind there are some warm and sheltered spots on the Estate and one of these contributed our first Small Copper of the year.
4 Speckled Woods and 2 Orange Tips were in the Elms today, though numbers of everything remain low.
The start to the season continues to be slow and 4 butterflies on the BMS transect in sunny but quite breezy conditions was pretty much representative – 3 Peacocks and a Small White.
In decent sunshine at last, the BMS transect walk produced Small White, Green-veined White and a few Peacocks and Small Tortoiseshells, but the star of the day was a female Brimstone on the Green Wall.
The start to the BMS transect season was subdued to say the least, with just one Peacock on the entire walk, though a Holly Blue and a belated first record of Comma were added from the Elms and gullies.
There wasn’t anything new for the year this morning, but small numbers of Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock amounted to an optimistic precursor to the weekend which, we are told, will be warm. Watch this space.
